The way information is processed is clearly explained, including emotions, feelings, cognition, and then the executive functions, with clear definitions for each aspect of higher functioning. The nature of various sources of damage and how to assess the outcome from a clinical psychological point of view will include (briefly) alcohol changes, depression and its physical components, traumatic brain injury and the dementias.

The role of the neurotransmitters will be described in terms of biological psychiatry, and the major divisions of medications that target these will be further described. Finally, a series of interventions will be described which are designed to optimise brain functioning in various clinical conditions such as major depression and anxiety disorders, enhance self efficacy, and a brief introduction to online assessment using various clinical psychological toolkits and neuropsychological toolkits will be given.

Despite our increased use of technology to communicate, literacy skills are still as important as ever, says local  speech pathologist Amanda Hreszczuk, who is raising awareness for Speech Pathology Week. "Poor literacy skills make it difficult to access an education, find a job and even take part in the community," Ms Hreszczuk said.
"During Speech Pathology Week, we want to encourage people who feel that perhaps their reading or writing skills aren't what they should be to take the first step and contact someone who can help like a speech pathologist."
"Almost half (46 per cent) of Australians aged between 15 and 74 years do not have the literacy skills needed to  meet the demands of everyday life. This shows how important it is to foster good literacy skills, regardless of age."
Being literate means being able to understand and analyse what you read, as well as being able to write in a variety of ways for different purposes, including stories, text messages, lists and completing forms. "Speech pathologists have the specialised knowledge and experience needed to identify communication difficulties and to provide people with the help that they need to build critical language and literacy skills," Ms Hreszczuk said. They play a vital role in the development of key speaking and listening skills, including awareness of the sounds in words and language comprehension.
These skills provide the foundation on which literacy is built. Visit speechpathologyaustralia.org.au for more information about speech pathology and Speech Pathology Week.
