How safe are schools? Among children who are victimised, how distressed are they? Are they internalising their distress as depression and anxiety, or are they externalising their distress by acting out or planning their revenge? Are students afraid for their safety at school even though they are not being victimised or engaging in bullying behaviour themselves?
William M. Reynolds, Ph.D., psychologist and noted author of many assessment tools for children and adolescents had these questions in mind when he developed the Reynolds Bully Victimization Scales for Schools.
Now Pearson Clinical Assessment is offering the opportunity to combine these Scales with the new Beck Youth Inventories – Second Edition (BYI-II) and Richard Butler’s Self Image Profiles (SIP) to build a comprehensive picture of the child’s experience of peer-related aggression or distress. The combination of these assessments is available to purchase as the Bullying Solution and represents good value.
Together the Reynolds Bully-Victimization Scales, the Beck Youth Inventories and the Self Image Profiles provide the clinician with all the tools the clinician needs to develop individual profiles to understand and treat the psychological underpinnings of bullying and victimisation.
DESCRIPTION
The Reynolds Bully-Victimization Scale consists of 3 scales:
1. The Bully-Victimization Scale (BVS) is designed to assess bullying behaviour and bully victimisation experience in children and adolescents.
The BVS consists of two sub scales, the Bully Scale and the Victimization Scale. The BVS may be used individually and as a school based screening measure for the identification of bullies and bully victims.
Assists in the creation of safe schools by identifying children who bully as well as their victims who often feel distressed, disenfranchised, and alienated from school.
2. The Bully-Victimization Distress Scale (BVDS) is designed to evaluate victimisation distress in children and adolescents in Years 3 to 12.
The BVDS measures a student’s psychological response to bullying and determines the internalising and externalising nature of this distress.
The BVDS can be used individually or for school based screening.
3. The School Violence Anxiety Scale (SVAS) is a measure of anxiety designed for use with students in Years 5 to 12. The SVAS evaluates students’ level of anxiety about the school as a safe environment, including anxiety specific to physical harm at school, harassment at school, and the potential for violence occurring at school. SVAS items evaluate physiological, cognitive, and emotional components of anxiety, and can be used individually or for school based screenings.
Use in School and Clinical settings
All three instruments may be used in both school and clinical settings and can be used to screen for children that engage in bullying as well as those who are victims. All three instruments can be used to monitor behaviour changes associated with intervention.
