Tasks are relevant to everyday living

Unlike adaptive behavior inventories that ask an informant to rate how a person functions, the Kaufman Functional Academic Skills Test (K-FAST) requires subjects to show they can perform the requested skill. K-FAST reading and arithmetic tasks relate to everyday activities, such as:

  •  Understand labels on drug containers

  • Follow directions in a recipe

  •  Budget monthly expenses

  • Make price comparisons between products

Fits a wide range of settings

Because the K-FAST can help assess a person’s capacity to function effectively in society, it can be used by schools, adult education programs, clinics, hospitals, prisons, the military, senior care facilities, and more. The K-FAST can be administered and scored by a variety of personnel-although results should only be interpreted by qualified professionals.

Provides valid, reliable scores

Performance on the Arithmetic and Reading Subtests and the Functional Academic Skills Composite can be interpreted using standard scores with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. The K-FAST was normed on a representative sample of 1,424 people. All items were checked for cultural bias. Several studies support the K-FAST’s reliability and validity, using both normal and clinical samples. Percentile ranks and descriptive categories are provided as additional aides to interpretation.

Co-Norming

The K-FAST was developed, field-tested, and standardised with the Kaufman Adolescent and Adult Intelligence Test (KAIT), the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT), and the Kaufman Short Neuropsychological Assessment Procedure (K-SNAP). These four tests provide a range of cognitive assessment options. Choose the K-FAST to assess functional reading and mathematics skills that might be overlooked by more traditional ability tests.
