To complement the well-respected BASC™-2 (Behaviour Assessment System for Children, Second Edition), the authors have developed the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire (PRQ) instrument, which helps capture a parent’s perspective on the parent-child relationship. With two forms — preschool (ages 2–5) and child and adolescent (ages 6–18) — the PRQ assessment can be completed in 10 to 15 minutes by the mother, father, or other primary caregiver. This brief, reliable inventory provides valuable information on a variety of dimensions that are important to consider in creating successful intervention and progress monitoring plans for remediating a child’s behaviour and emotional problems. The PRQ evaluation reports on traditional parent-child dimensions such as attachment, communication, and involvement — and also presents information on parenting style, parenting confidence, stress, and satisfaction with the child’s school.

The PRQ assessment provides information that is useful across a variety of settings and applications, including for:

• School psychological evaluations as a complementary tool to other assessments to help determine an appropriate parental role in a child’s intervention or treatment plan

• Clinical and paediatric evaluations in which parent involvement is key to an effective treatment plan

• Family counselling evaluations to assess different parenting relationships, beliefs, and practices among parents or other caregivers

• Intervention/treatment programs in which parents are involved in the treatment and therapy process
