The Beery VMI helps assess the extent to which individuals can integrate their visual and motor abilities.

The Short Format and Full Format tests present drawings of geometric forms arranged in order of increasing difficulty that the individual is asked to copy. The Short Format is often used with children ages 2 years to 8 years.

The Beery VMI series also provides supplemental Visual Perception and Motor Coordination tests, which use the same stimulus forms as the Short Format and Full Format tests.

These optional assessments are designed to be administered after results from the Short Format or Full Format test show the need for further testing, to help compare an individual's test results with relatively pure visual and motor performances. (One or both of the supplemental tests may be used.)

A statistical comparison of results from all three tests can be quickly and easily made on the graphic profile provided in the test booklets.

Key Features
The Beery VMI is among the few psychological assessments that provide standard scores as low as 2 years.

The Beery VMI 6th Edition Manual provides normative data from birth to 100 years. The developmental "Stepping Stones" parent checklist focuses on early identification of developmental difficulties in gross motor, fine motor, visual and visual-motor skills in children from birth to 6 years. Standard scores for the visual-motor integration test and supplemental tests are provided for 2 – 100 years.

Independent research indicates that the Beery VMI has considerable promise as a tool for identifying Alzheimer’s and other forms of adult dementia.

A culture-free, non-verbal assessment, the Beery VMI is useful with individuals of diverse environmental, educational, and linguistic backgrounds.

The Beery VMI provides time-efficient screening tools, with the Short and Full Format tests taking only 10–15 minutes to complete and the supplemental tests taking only 5 minutes each.

The Short and Full Format tests can be administered individually or to groups. (Individual administration is recommended for the supplemental tests.)

Norms
The 6th edition of the Beery VMI was standardised in late 2009 and early 2010 on 1,737 individuals aged 1 year to 18 years. The current adult norms remain unchanged from the 5th edition and are based on data collected from 1,021 adults aged 19 years to 100 years.
