Latest Edition with Australian Normative Data
The WISC-IV Australian makes important advances from the WISC-III to provide the most effective clinical tool representing cutting edge research and thinking. This timely revision, now with Australian norms and language adaptation, is the result of more than a decade of research and success with the WISC-III.
Australian Standardisation Project
The WISC-IV together with the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test - Second Edition (WIAT-II) and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals - Fourth Edition (CELF-4) has been part of the largest fully census-matched test co-standardisation ever undertaken in Australia.
The new Australian sample for the WISC-IV Australian offers the most comprehensive sample of child and adolescent intelligence in Australia and accurately matches the current population of children, according to the 2001 Australian census data.
Even Stronger Clinical Utility
Understanding of learning disabilities and attentional disorders has greatly expanded since the publication of the WISC–III. The WISC–IV Australian makes important advances from the WISC–III in order to provide the most effective clinical tool representing cutting edge research and thinking. The WISC–IV Australian empowers you to use your experience, skills and judgement to relate test results to referral questions.
Benefits of WISC–IV Australian
The WISC–IV Australian is designed to meet several goals:
-
Expand and strengthen clinical utility to support your decision making
-
Develop the four Index Scores as Core evaluative data
-
Improve the assessment of fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed
-
Improve subtest reliabilities, floors and ceilings from WISC–III
-
Link to the WIAT–II Australian and to measures of memory (Children’s Memory Scale,CMS), adaptive behaviour (Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, ABAS), emotional intelligence (Bar-On EQ), and giftedness (Gifted Rating Scale, GRS)
Changes from WISC–III
Both the look and the feel of the instrument are updated to improve the testing experience for you and the child. The WISC–IV Australian’s modern artwork is colourful and engaging, it is Australian language adapted and incorporates recent changes in clothing, technology, and demographics. Instructions to both the examiner and the child are improved to make the WISC–IV Australian even more user friendly.
Other changes include:
-
Updated norms to match current Australian census data
-
Australian Language Adaptation
-
Replacing outdated items
-
Expanding the manual to include a chapter on interpretation as well as an extended discussion on validity
-
Reducing weight to improve kit portability
-
Subtest Changes
-
Three subtests from the previous WISC-III have been eliminated from the WISC–IV Australian: Mazes, Picture Arrangement and Object Assembly. Picture Completion, Arithmetic and Information are now supplemental subtests.
New Subtests
Several new subtests are added to reflect current clinical knowledge and practice:
-
Word Reasoning: measures reasoning with verbal material
-
Matrix Reasoning: measures fluid reasoning
-
Picture Concepts: measures fluid reasoning, perceptual organisation, and categorisation
-
Letter-Number Sequencing: measures working memory (adapted from WAIS–III)
-
Cancellation: measures processing speed using random and structured animal target forms
Four Composite Scores
In order to make interpretation more clinically meaningful, the dual IQ and Index structure from WISC–III has been replaced with a single system of four composite scores (consistent with the Four Index Scores in WISC–III) and the Full Scale IQ. This new system helps you better understand a child’s needs in relation to contemporary theory and research in cognitive information processing.
WISC-IV Australian Scoring Assistant & Writer
Save time and effort in generating reports with the WISC-IV Scoring Assistant. The software aids reporting and interpreting results from the WISC-IV Australian. With the Scoring Assistant, it is possible to score a case, maintain demographic information, store raw scores, and produce comprehensive reports.
A complement to the WIAT-II Australian Scoring Assistant, the software features a table and graph report, which provides raw to scaled score conversions, strength and weakness discrepancies, indexscores, and ability achievement discrepancies with the WIAT-II Australian.

The WISC-IV Australian Writer includes all the features of the Scoring Assistant with the addition of a comprehensive interpretive reporting function. The interpretation rationale built into the software is based on the traditional successive levels approach to test integration and proceeds from the global to the specific. Interpretation of statistically signifi cant differences between scores is the basis of the interpretative process. The clinician can choose the recommendations included in the report. A Clinical and Background Review and a Parent Report are also provided.
