Based on Thomas Brown’s progressive model of cognitive impairment in ADD, the Brown ADD Scales assess not only hyperactivity, but also less apparent impairments of executive function. The Scale consists of 40 clinician administered items that elicit self-report information to evaluate DSM-IV “inattention” criteria as well as a variety of cognitive and affective symptoms of ADD. Five clusters frequently associated with ADD are measured: activating and organising to work; sustaining attention and concentration; sustaining energy and effort; irritability; depressed mood and
sensitivity to criticism; and utilising working memory and accessing recall.

The scales indicate overall cognitive impairment in comparison with non-clinical adolescent and adult populations. Clinically cross-validated cut-off scores allow the clinician to determine the likely of an ADD diagnosis with excellent sensitivity and specifi city. In addition, an Outcome Worksheet allows treatment response to be monitored.

Brown Attention Deficit Disorder Scales – Scoring Assistant

The Brown ADD Scoring Assistant scores all adult, adolescent and child forms. It offers the clinician a graphical representation of how multiple respondents answered questions for each cluster as well as a narrative report explaining the finding of the assessment.
