The Brown Attention-Defi cit Disorder Scales for Children and Adolescents are designed for ages 3 to 12 years and 12 to 18 years. Similar to the adult version, the children’s version assesses critical executive aspects of cognitive functioning, the underlying problem in ADHD or ADD.

Three forms are available to assist in obtaining a consistent measure of ADD across the life span (in conjunction with adult forms):

  • Primary/Preschool Form – 3 to 7 years

  • School-Age Form – 8 to 12 years

  • Adolescent Form – 12 to 18 years

As with the adult version, the scales assess fi ve clusters of executive function frequently impaired in ADD, plus an important sixth one, Monitoring and Self-Regulating Action, that encompasses problems in appropriately controlling
behaviour. The clusters are:

  • Organising, Prioritising and Activating to Work

  • Focusing, Sustaining and Shifting Attention to Task

  • Regulating Alertness, Sustaining Effort and Processing Speed

  • Managing Frustration and Modulating Emotions

  • Utilising Working Memory and Accessing Recall

  • Monitoring and Self-Regulating Action

Administration of these 40 to 50 item screening instruments takes only 10– 25 minutes. Easy-to-understand parent and teacher questionnaires are available for all ages. For ages 8–12 years, self-report forms with child-friendly items are provided to obtain information that may be overlooked by observers.

Professionals working with children can use the Brown ADD Scales for Children for screening, as part of a comprehensive diagnosis, and for monitoring of treatment responses, making the scales useful in a wide range of educational, clinical and managed care settings.

Brown ADD Diagnostic Form

The Brown ADD Diagnostic Form for Children and Adolescents can be used with the Brown ADD Scales for Children to gather and integrate relevant diagnostic information about a child, providing a more thorough approach to examining for
many facets of ADD impairments. It provides a set of forms and procedures for taking a clinical history, a comorbidity screener and a worksheet for integrating data from the ADD rating scales with standardised scores for IQ indices, verbal memory and academic achievement tests. It also includes summary forms useful for diagnosis and for explaining strengths and impairments to teachers, parents and children.

NOTE: The Scoring Assistant software is not Mac OS compatible.
